WHF Male Amur Leopard 1 - Artur, Russian name for Artemisios, is one of two Amur Leopards born at Novosibirsk Zoo, Russia. Their mother was a female Amur leopard from Berlin Zoo and their father a male Amur leopard from Moscow Zoo.
He weighs 43 Kg (86 lbs approx), slightly lighter than his brother Artem and he eats 3 – 4 Kg (6 – 8 lbs) per meal, 3 times a week.
Artur is darker in colour Artem and it has taken him a long time to accept visitors around him. Although elusive he is easily enticed out of his house on photo shoot days with the promise of titbits of meat.
Artur is captivating and displays a beauty only seen in such magnificent animals as these Amur leopards.
Artur is playing a vital role in keeping the Amur leopard species alive. He and his brother are part of the comprehensive Amur Leopard Conservation Programme, being 2 of around 130 in captivity in a carefully managed European breeding programme.
Artur is paired with our female leopard "Xizi" they share adjoining enclosures and was they are accustomed to each other will be allowed to mix.
These cats are at the forefront of WHF's aims in supporting this much endangered species. It is envisaged their offspring´s future generations will be released back to the wild.
